Mpumalanga boasts the best golf course in South Africa – the exclusive Leopard Creek, a fabulously manicured course bordering, across the Crocodile River, the Kruger National Park. No expense has been spared to make this magnificent privately owned course, with it’s remarkable Clubhouse, the leader of the golfing pack. Visitors’ play here is only allowed if resident at one of the local “approved” lodges.
From here it’s a stone’s throw into the Kruger Park via the Malelane Gate. There are now quite a few private concessions in the park which offer the luxury game experience, but are actually in the main park. Jock Safari Lodge is a superb lodge conveniently situated to the Leopard Creek course, and offers not only luxury accommodation and cuisine, but off road and night drives in the park.
Heading further north one reaches the Sabi Sand area, a well established private game reserve adjoining Kruger, and with some fabulous lodges e.g Sabi Sabi, Exeter, Londolozi and Nottens. Here leopard is regularly seen.
Nearby is the small but bustling town of Hazyview which has easy access to two interesting resort courses, which are great to play. Closest is Sabi River Sun, then a little further away the White River Country Club. From Hazyview there are scenic drives along the “Panorama” route, with spectacular views at God’s Window and the Blyde River Canyon, plus the historic gold mining town of Pilgrim’s Rest.
